A julgar pelos indicados, temos dois grandes vencedores na lista: em primeiro lugar, o serviço de streaming Netflix, que emplacou 13 indicações para Roma, filme de Alfonso Cuarón (o primeiro da Netflix a ser indicado ao Oscar de Melhor Filme), e A Balada de Buster Scruggs, filme de Joel e Ethan Coen; e os estúdios da Marvel, que alcançaram um patamar diferenciado no Oscar, com as sete indicações conquistadas por Pantera Negra, filme de Ryan Coogler, primeiro filme baseado em uma história de super-heroi a ser indicado ao Oscar de Melhor Filme.

Surpresas na lista, tendo em vista a temporada de premiações, as ausências de Timothée Chalamet em Ator Coadjuvante, de Emily Blunt em Melhor Atriz, de Bradley Cooper e Peter Farrelly em Diretor; e as presenças de Yalitza Aparicio e Marina de Tavira, as estrelas de Roma, em Melhor Atriz e Atriz Coadjuvante, respectivamente.
